The Mary Rice Building Extension at St Joseph’s College delivered a three-level expansion designed to accommodate enrolment growth and modern teaching requirements within a live campus.
The ground floor incorporated three new science laboratories, a preparation and technical room, a General Learning Area and a service corridor linking to the existing music block. Level 1 provided a shared senior student and staff study lounge, offices, staff amenities, gym and PE classrooms, together with a new student amenities block. Level 2 delivered seven General Learning Areas configured with operable walls to allow flexible use as large-format examination spaces. External works included covered walkways, outdoor teaching areas, accessible connections to existing buildings, PWD parking and rainwater storage, complemented by distinctive architectural blades and powder-coated battens in school colours.
Despite significant latent conditions, including removal of approximately 4,000 tonnes of asbestos-contaminated material, and major weather events, disciplined program control ensured completion ahead of schedule. The project demonstrated capability in delivering complex Type A construction while effectively managing scope refinement and stakeholder coordination.
