Mapoon Housing, Cape York

Located in Mapoon on the Cape York Peninsula, this remote housing project delivered a series of purpose-built residential dwellings designed to suit the local climate and community needs.

The original scope comprised six low-set Design and Construct homes, which was subsequently expanded to a total of eleven dwellings following strong client confidence in the quality of the initial delivery. The homes included a mix of two, three and four-bedroom layouts, with selected dwellings adapted to support accessibility requirements. Each residence was designed to respond to the tropical environment, incorporating wide overhangs, louvres and generous verandas to maximise natural ventilation and improve comfort in hot and humid conditions.

Delivered in an isolated location accessible only by four-wheel drive, the project required careful logistical planning, particularly during the wet season when road access was limited and materials, plant and supplies were transported via barge. Strong focus was placed on Indigenous participation and training, supporting local employment and capability development while contributing to successful project delivery.
